Eyetunes Instrument Art is a collaboration between Shana Radashaw and Jed Swanson. We reside and create in southern California, and have been making art together, in one form or another, since 2003.
We made our first piece of instrument art in 2013, after Shana's first guitar, which had been a gift from a stranger, and upon which she had learned to play, broke. Although it would have taken too much money to repair, its sentimental value was too great to simply throw it away. We both feel that musical instruments posess a beauty born both from their function and their form. So it felt like a natural thing for us to use this guitar as a base for artistic experimentation. The result convinced us that we were onto something good. And so, Eyetunes Instrument Art was born.
We only use broken musical instruments as the base for our pieces. They have come from individual people, from music stores and repair shops, from distributors and manufacturers. Really, anywhere we can find them. We use a combination of woodworking, paper mache, paint, mosaic, and assemblage, with a variety of different materials, finished with a coating of epoxy resin.
